The Pleasures and Pitfalls of Planning

Today we (Myself, John, Andy and Joel) are meeting at the conference room at the Saint John Regional Library to do some calendar planning for 2010. There are some pitfalls to planning. The one that comes to mind is that we can plan and then forget to seek the Lord’s will in our plans. James instructs us with some caution on this point…”Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’ As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. (James 4:14-17 ESV).” The truth is, all of us need to remember that our plans must be according to God’s will.

On the other hand, there is a great pleasure to planning as well. If we fail to plan, we have no direction, no sense of where we are going. So plans are good. Pray for us today as we attempt to think carefully through the coming year!!

  1. I think of Paul…he made lots of plans, but the difference between what he planned and what he actually did were sometimes miles apart (literally).
